‘An Interior Decorated’ by Joyce Kozloff

Kozloff explains how painting on canvas and such materials no longer reflected her thinking. She wanted to move on to something bigger and most importantly, palpable. The piece consists of hand-painted tiling in shapes of stars and hexagons. These were influenced from Egyptian wall paintings, Chinese painted porcelains, Moroccan ceramics and so on. Silkscreened hangings are elevated from the walls and a series of smaller lithographs titled ‘Is It Still High Art?’ (1978-80). The piece is her personal anthology of the decorative arts, and is carefully mapped so the inspired patterns are clustered together in placement relative to their origin.
