Lourdes Portillo – Las Madres: The Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo

Las Madres: The Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo is a documentary which exposes the activism of united mothers whose children ‘disappeared’ and were abducted by the Argentinian government / extremist right-wing groups during times of political distress in the country. Since the outbreak of these crimes, the mothers march in protest in the Plaza de Mayo – a square near the government palace in Buenos Aires traditionally wearing white headscarves. It is estimated over 30,000 people disappeared over the time of political conflict in Argentina between the 1970’s to early 1980’s.

Filmmaker Lourdes Portillo made a documentary film on the Mothers, they meet once a week in the Plaza de Mayo and have been going for 39 years.
